Can I try and increase the OC by overvolting. Is it safe? How much life will it take off gpu? And can I just put the slider up to max, I have heard voltage is limited by the bios anyway

You'll be completely fine.

 

Watch a few OC videos on the 1070.

The max default voltage is 1.062V.

If you move voltage slider to the max, you will get 1.093V max which is only 0.031V more.

 

Make sure you don't hit power limit otherwise you will just lose performance.

just don't set it to apply OC on startup until you perfected the OC

Turning my 1080 to max voltage allows it to boost up another 40hz or so. The card rides the power limit even stock. I only need to raise the power if I overclock. Even then it rides power and voltage limits. 

 

Wont do anything to the card except run hotter. Which is what actually hurts the card. So turn the fans up.

Nvidia basically give you 0 control over voltage. Yeah you can increase it a small amount but not enough to make a big difference so it is basically impossible for you to wreck your card from overvolting.
