So I have finally saved up enough money to build a pc. Although, I have few questions. If I build a pc on a wood floor and table do I need one of those static shock bands? Why is DDR4 ram so expensive and does it every go on sale?

Here is my part list on pc part picker:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hytybj

If there’s any other suggestions you have they would be welcomed.

I'd get at least a Hyper 212 Evo.

I'd throw in a $50 WD Blue 1TB HDD.

You can get WAAAYY cheaper 1060 6GBs.

Change the case for something better.

EDIT: As for the static, just plug in your PSU and touch it occasionally.

  • I've only used static shock bands a couple of times, but they're good to have. Just make sure to ground yourself some time in advance. (like on a bed frame or radiator)
  • Ram is expensive because of a worldwide shortage: Mobile phone RAM (And a factory fire?) has increased demand.

Here's a link to use when something goes wrong - and I'd guess something would. It's just how it goes. (Link - No Post)

It's an absolutely terrible time to build a new PC. The 1060 6GB should cost less than half of that. And RAM prices are messed up, due to NAND shortage.

Don't get Kaby, either get Coffee or Ryzen.

Don't get a crappy low end air cooler. Use the stock cooler for locked Intel CPUs and Ryzen. For unlocked Intel CPUs (though the only one sort of worth it with that budget is the 8600K), get an H7 at least.

Faster RAM does make a difference. Brand, however, does not.

There should be cheaper decent SSDs. Like the MX300, MX500 and SL308.

Don't get a WiFi card. Use ethernet. If that isn't possible, use Homeplug. If that isn't possible, it's not possible to power the PC

:)

Dude honestly thanks, I dont know what I would do with out you. Although I don’t want to pay a pretty penny for a really expensive case unless it’s really good. That 1060 was the cheapest I could find but if you can find cheaper I would be in for a better case. Thanks again

In the US, there's this:https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gL98TW/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1060-6gb-g1-gaming-video-card-gv-n1060g1-gaming-6gd

For some reason, they're a lot cheaper in Canada. I often find them going for around $375-$400.

As for the case, Cougar isn't a very good brand, and that case isn't one of their good cases. I'd personally get something from Fractal Design.

Overall, the build looks alright. As previously stated:

  • I'd upgrade the cooling a bit (to Hyper 212 Evo or something) (Check the Case's manual to make sure your cooler will fit (CPU Cooler Height:))
  • You'll want some HDD storage. I usually use around 500GBs  - so a 1TB drive will be fine.
  • A 1060 should do you fine for 1080p, but If you're using a higher resolution, you may want to re-think it.

Hmm, lots of helpful replies already. Here are my recommendations:

  • Don't buy an older generation new, only buy it used. Look at Ryzen or the i5 8400, as others have recommended. If you're not in a huge hurry, wait for the cheaper Intel chipsets to come out.
  • Get a better cooler. I recommend the CryOrig H7.
  • That's a ridiculous amount to pay for that video card. Buy something used before dropping that on a 1060. The Reddit Hardware Swap is a great source for used hardware.
  • 250GB fills up pretty quickly. I'd look into either mass storage, or a larger SSD.

Welcome to the forum!

Hmmm, weird, all those years gaming on a WiFi card must have been an illusion! 9_99_9

Why spend that much if you're just using it for Bluetooth? Just get one of those little Bluetooth USB dongles for $5 or $10.

Thanks for the advice. I have heard a lot about this but I don't know when a good time will be. And also is it just really expensive or the hardware is just bad?

It's mostly GPU pricing

You should just do a Ryzen APU build when it comes out soon, feb 12th I think

$169 for what is basically an R5 1400 + RX 550, 1500X is a placeholder

Includes a 1080p IPS 75HZ free-sync display, Though I don't know if it's over display port or HDMI

This would be the monitor to get, it's free-sync over HDMI, unless you upgrade the board to one with display port
