Hello,

I'm currently working on repairing a CPU socket(LGA 1150) and was wondering what the risks are if I fire up the machine with a CPU in the socket if any of the pins are still a little bent. Would I risk frying the CPU or motherboard?

Thanks!

try to straight the pins the best you can

Doing that lol.

What kind of risk is there if say one pin isn't 100% straight?

uuu just fix all of the ones you see? you could end up killing the chip if some power pins get screwed up and you create a short or whatever

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

There's quite a few of these(probably like 5% or so of the socket pins are bent). I'm doing my best to straighten them as well as I can.

do them all before you try booting it. takes a bit of time but its not really that hard IMO

wow, why bother

I can understand a handful of pins and trying to fix

So you are basically doing a last ditch effort, I can understand that and your effort.

Take some pictures of the cpu pls

Will do.

I'm putting in this effort to avoid having to buy a Z97 board if at all possible

Do you know what caused that. That's some pretty major damage.

I literally have no idea, I got this from a friend since it didn't work. It started when it didn't POST at all, and from my troubleshooting I figured the board must be dead, but I'm beginning to wonder if it was a problem with memory config(that I unfortunately didn't test), so I'm hoping to get this repaired and hopefully the board still works so we can reuse it. Buying another one shouldn't be too much of a problem, but Z97 boards new are pretty hard to come by these days.

Memory related issues are usually a symptom of bent/broken pins. You seem to have plenty of those. Good luck.

Thanks. Yeah, it looked a lot worse when I first got it, I spent probably a grand total of 20 hours or so just to get it the way it looks now. Getting those pins to a more vertical state instead of being flat was no easy feat....

it doesn't have to be perfect... as long as it's within the size of the pads on the CPU you're golden.... it's big enough that they still look out of line but small enough it's impossible to get them inline perfectly. i've done it multiple times

    Ryzen R6 5700X

Thanks a lot! I'm doing my best to make it perfect, but I obviously won't be able to...
