Is it a bad idea to overclock a graphics card without proper liquid cooling? My card(link below) has a dual fan that blows directly onto the heat sink, but is it really enough to keep the card cool in an overclock configuration? The card is marketed as OC edition, but would that only count towards the card’s makeup(parts of the PCB itself) or would that imply that the fan is enough to maintain stable temperature? My card currently runs at a max of 65-67°c, I assume that means my fan curve is set up well.

CPU and GPU overclocking dont necessarily need liquid cooling. Only extremely hot cards like Vega and X299 8 core or above require liquid cooling for safe overclocking. You can do it to your card with its stock cooler.

WELL looking from your card, that cooler might be a great 480 tamer when overclocked

That card shouldn't need liquid cooling to overclock well. You can give it a try, no harm there.

Just set the fans to 100% and see how high you can go

Just be careful with the voltage, too much you may accidentally fry your card, and double check with your manufacturer to make sure you aren't voiding any warranties.

How would I know if the voltage is too high? Msi after burner caps it at its max right?

Do your research, without any tinkering, afterburner does keep you safe, but you can mess with the voltages to increase your clock speed, remember the more voltage the shorter the life of the card, if you apply to much, you may just burn out your card.

My RX 460 with modded bios is on air and I run it at 1340mhz/1870mhz clock/memory respectively with +12mv, which is quite a jump from the stock 1220/1750. Runs just fine, doesn't get hot enough to cause any problems.

Your 480 will do fine overclocking on the stock cooler. It's not too beefy, but it's nice quality by the looks of it. Keep the temps in check and you'll be fine. Don't push voltage up too much.

Id slow step the clocks up by 10mhz at a time on stock voltage with furmark running until you notice artifacts. Then up voltage a tick n try again. Do that with both memory and clocks and you'll find the sweet spot easily without cooking the card.

Should I be concerned with the temps of the memory, or does it run cooler than the core? Or is the temp combined with the core temp?

Memory temps you shouldn't be too concerned about. Just watch the temp readout on the right of Afterburner, that's the GPU temp as a whole. Not even sure if there is a readout for memory temps? In any case, take your time. Once you hit a certain threshold you'll be getting a negligible performance increase and that's pretty much where you should stop.

For instance my card performs an average of 7-10fps better at 1330mhz from stock, title depending. From 1320-1330mhz it's about 1-2 frame difference. At 1340mhz the frames are stabler, but they don't go up any higher. You'll find the max pretty easily.
