So I recently built a computer and am looking for a new monitor.  I've got a Ryzen 5 1600 paired with a GTX1070, so I'm thinking I'll look for a 27" 1440p display.

The issue I have is whether or not to get a monitor with G-Sync.  I really don't want to pay the premium for it.  I play mostly open world games like GTA, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, & Mass Effect.  I do mix in the occasional FPS (but I'm not very good at them.)  I would like a 144hz refresh and a low response time.  With that in mind, would G-Sync be worth the extra expense?  Any monitors I should look at that are not G-Sync?

Personally speaking G-Sync is not a necessity it is a luxury.

You can solve screen tearing without it, for what is worth it, see G-Sync as a shortcut to your gaming smoothness.

G-syncs worth isnt based on hte gmes you are playing. Its worth is based on whether you are distracted when you notice a drop in fps and whether the screen tearing is something you are OK with. Personaly I think G-sync is worth it when playing games at around 60fps if they occasionally drop to around 30. I dont think it is worth it if you are playing games at like 200fps then it drops to 150.

G-sync is amazing but they can add like $100 price premium.

If u are getting 144hz panel and didnt have the extra cash for G-sync just use traditional V-sync since u play non competitive games so input lag shouldn't be a huge problem.

Or u can use fast sync which will help eliminate tearing, yes its 100% tearing free but u might experience micro stuttering at high framerates.

With 144hz panel u wont notice the tearing as bad as u were using 60hz panel though.

And your card is powerful enough so u dont have to worry about frame dips.
