Front Panel USB ports speed issues

Well, I always suspected that I didn't get proper transfer speed on my front panel USB 3.0 ports. But, I never really tested them. Yesterday I got myself a new portable 1TB HDD and that's when I really felt the problem on my ports.

 

This is from the rear/motherboard USB 3.0 ports:

 

 

Now, in the front ports:

Have you made sure to connect the USB 3.0 header to the port on the motherboard and not the USB 2.0 header?

Is that even possible? The two cables are totally different, I'm positive I connected them properly.

 

I also installed all the available drivers on the mobo's website.

You are right, they are two different connectors. I was just checking to make sure it wasn't a error 40

If I may ask could you send a picture of the front panel with the USB ports and also a picture of the motherboard?

What motherboard is that? Z77 supports 4 USB3.0 from the CPU so if they are all on the back, the front might be another chipset which would explain the lower speeds

It's Asrock's Z77 Extreme4. The front panel ports are USB 3.0, even if they were on other chipset, the difference shouldn't be this high

Just trying to rule out things  

The front USB3.0 on that motherboard is directly from the CPU so next thing to check if its actualy connecting as 3.0.

Because looking at the speed: USB 2.0 - 480Mbps - 60 MBps and since its half duplex = 30 MBps.

 

So minus some overhead its running perfectly at 2.0 specs  I would guess a contact in the front USB header is wonky. Try some contact spray.

I would like to test and see if it's only the HDD or other devices. If you have other USB 3.0 storage devices please test them and see if the issue still persist. If the speed still is slow with other devices, I would say that it could be something with the connector on the motherboard.

I have a USB 3.0 Adata flashdrive. It transfers at 9-11 MBps on my PC whereas it goes upto 65MBps on my friend's PC
