I have around 6-8 virtual machines running on my computer which my old i5 is just not capable of. So I search a new CPU making this possible, as it is only CPU making problems, while both RAM and Graphiccard are under a really small load.

Which CPU/motherboard combination would you suggest? don't want to spend over 600$ on CPU + Motherboard

thank you for the help

Max

ryzen 7 1700 + b350 motherboard + 32gb DDR4 around 2666MHz+

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

it's going to be 12nm isn't it?

yes with lower latency and slightly higher clocks compared to first gen ryzen.

Use Xeon. They are much better for server/VM tasks.

Main system (Mini itx 80mm)

i5-7500 | Asrock h110m | Noctua L9i | Realan H80 Case | 8GB 2400 Ram ADATA | M600 SSD | 500 GB Seagate

Other System (Laptop)

i7 3632QM | Toshiba | 8GB Corsair VS RAM | Sandisk SSD PLUS | 500GB Toshiba HDD

would be probably good as the system runs 24/7

Honestly I would take advantage of the price cuts/deals on the current Ryzen lineup.  Wait one more year till the 7nm ryzen chips come out as you would be easily able to upgrade with the am4 platform.

E5-2670v2 looks good to me. Although it has low single core score but it's a 10 core BEAST. It would cost you around $150. Add $100-125 for the motherboard.

Found a better one: E5 2690 v2. It has 1.5x the performance and also has a better single core score. Should cost you around 300.

Well according to CPU.Userbenchmarks that has a much lower speed than the amd ryzen 1800x in single core, quadcore and multicore of around 35%

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Xeon-E5-2690-v2-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-1800X/m13436vs3916

given that it is at least as expensive (at least here in Germany even more expensive) it does not really look that attractive to me
