I'd use Linux Mint with the cinnamon desktop, it's pretty similar to Windows and it's a pretty good looking choice as well. You will need to download the distro, use something to burn it to a USB drive and then you just boot from that and install

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Linux Mint is what I just installed for my HTPC build as well. Definitely recommended for its easy of use and familiar layout and look.

Agree that mint is a good choice. Depending on use case though, I might go with ubuntu 17.10 though, I find mint a bit awkward for installing software that doesn't come in the package manager, whereas with ubuntu it's a lot easier IMO to use command line to install some packages. Could just be me of course, but after trying many linux distros I still find ubuntu easier to work with.

Of course if you're only wanting to watch movies, listen to music and do basic office type things also, then pretty much any linux desktop distro will work and comes pre-installed with many packages that will do the above.
