Mining on old hardware?

24/7 can't be done, just when i'm home and it's not doing something else. maybe 6/8 hours a day of use.

Not profitable.

so i'm generally against mining because of the prices etc. but i thought mining on an old server i have laying around won't hurt much.

the specs of that rig:

dual xeon L5630 8 core 16 thread

10GB of ram

RX 460

what can i mine with it in a way that will make it profitable?

and can i mine without using up all of my cpu? it still has to host files.

I can't help you very much but you should add some more Info for better results, like how much you pay for electricity in your region and if the rig can run 24/7 without disturb you

Not worth it: you need gpu not cpu power. you need more power efficient hardware (you dont need 10gb of ram either)

the thing is, i use this machine for virtualization. that's why it has such beefy cpu's. i was planning to mine on it when it wasn't in use, but as you have said, not profitable.

probably only good enough to balance out the cost of electricity used by the system. 460 is kind of slow.

You wouldn't make very much but if you don't pay for power then yes it would be profitable

well eventually i might have to. if my parents notice a massive increase in the electricity used they will probably charge me for it.

so the point is that if i have to pay for the power then it's not profitable anymore?

If you did have to start paying for power it would drastically cut into your profit, it just depends on what you decide to mine and how much your power costs. Unless you have really expensive power I wouldn't worry too much about it. One gpu shouldn't use an absurd amount of power

but can't i mine on the cpu's? those xeons are way overkill for the gpu by comparison...

I know how that feels (check my signature) but mining on cpus is going to be really slow, it might work but it may not be worth the time. You may have 16 threads to work with but a gpu can have hundreds or more commonly now thousands of cores to work with. You may be able to make a profit with the gpu still so that is good For the cpus maybe you could put them to work F@H or something similar

F@H?

i know nothing about this sort of thing, or about mining in general. that's why i asked if my machine was profitable in the first place, before i spend time reading up on the whole thing.

but i'll start reading up on it then. maybe i can overclock that gpu a little bit, would that help it?

F@H (folding at home) is a program made my Stanford University that allows your PC to do protein folding simulations for medical purposes check it out by clicking right here

Overclocking might help but keep in mind if you overclock you are increasing the powerdraw of the gpu

that gpu has no pci-e power connectors. so i can pull a max of 75 watts from the mobo i believe.

i'll check the folding thing out for sure.

Oh good point, I didn't realize that about that card.

If you have more questions about folding feel free to message me or check the forums, there are a few really well made pages about it and they have a wealth of information

i already asked in that folding topic you linked if it would properly utilize the Xeons.. i guess you can answer that question as well then.

Gpus work better than cpus for folding but they do work, I use mine and the nice thing is that you don't have to hit any particular goal like you would with mining. Every little bit counts

I mean you arent paying for the power, but your parents are.

So even if you just break even with power costs deducted... Might as well just steal the money from your mom's purse. Faster and easier that way 9_9

nah, i was gonna hook up one of those wattmeter things, and record the consumption.

i'm allowed a maximum number of watts used before i have to pay into the cost. a 500watt server would definetly cross the line.
