I did try Seagate Dashboard, but it wouldn't run after 8%, was I using the wrong software?

Hmm, seems to be a Seagate Expansion Desktop unit, you may have better luck trying DiscWizard.

What is the best free way to backup my system? I have a Seagate 3TB External HDD.

Well "best" depends on what you're looking for

  • Do you care about waiting long for backups to be done?
  • Do you need file history in case you want to roll back?
  • Do you want to be able to access the files at any time without any extra software?

You can back up your data using our free software DiscWizard (which is a limited version of Acronis' software developed for Seagate drives) if you've got a Seagate Expansion, or another free software, Seagate Dashboard if you've got a Seagate Backup Plus.

I would say the "best" is a combination of simple copying and pasting and using Shadow Copy

Okay, I'll give it a try, I have a lot of Seagate products I never knew about the software haha.

No problem. Another tool you may find spiffy for your Expansion Desktop drive is Seagate Drive Settings, which will allow you to tinker with the drive's sleep settings, toggle lights, and run diagnostics.

If you're ever wondering what software is available for a Seagate drive/device, you can either search the model name and pull up the support page for it which will have downloads related to the drive, or you can always ask your friendly neighborhood forums team and we will help suss it out.
