Need to replace a failed SSD in my second rig. So I'm going to throw my Samsung 650 into it. Then get a new one for my ryzen rig.

1300x

MSI B350M gaming pro

8gb ddr 2666

Was looking a the XPG sx6000 and evo 850. Both 250gb. Looks like the XPG is a better buy. Is there anything wrong with the SX6000? The sx6000 is only $7 more. and i like the idea of not using a sata power cable.

XPG series use MLC nand which suppose to be better but the 850 EVO use 3D Vnand technology it use TLC nand but afaik it outperform even MLC nand flash in terms of performance and lifespan.

SX6000 is NVME, 850 is SATA. I think the answer is pretty simple. SX6000.

XPG is good performance wise due to the fast NAND and decent controller.

The EVO however is imo more reliable, and Samsung's warranty is really good.

I highly doubt the reliability is that different.

The SX is NVME though ;) It'll perform better for sure.

You'd be surprised, Samsung have optimised the shit out of their controllers to make the wear on the NAND less than normal. 850Pro 1TB lasted 7PB of writes before dying during a stress test.

Meanwhile the SX6000 is based on a brand new Realtek chipset that isn't used in many other products, and according to a lot of reviews it gets throttle-causingly hot.

Using benchmarks sourced from the Newegg reviews for the SX6000 (reputable, eh?) and Legitreviews' 850EVO review, I found that the SX6000 achieves higher sequential (lots of files in the same folder, good example would be videos) (usual behaviour for NVMe) but loses out in 4k random reads and writes (best example comparison would be smaller files stored in different directories) at both queue depths.

idk

I'm not a heavy user, my 650 has 6.1TB written. It's mainly reads I do.

I thought all evo's use mlc as well?

I'm not getting the pro it's stupid priced here. I can't even find benches on the sx6000

SAMSUNG 850 PRO 256GB $164.99

SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 250GB $122.99

XPG SX6000 256GB $129.99

Yeah, the pro was for comparison's sake. It's based on more reliable but slower MLC VNand, whereas the EVO is based on faster but less reliable TLC Vnand. TLC has matured from what it used to be in the early days.

The 850 is better for everyday performance. The SX6000 is better for video editing and other tasks that rely on sequential operations.

Your choice.

idk

Yes, they have, and I agree they perform very well. However very few people will ever reach even 1PB of written data. In the 2PB test, Corsair drives actually fared better than the Samsung Evo. So. They're not always the best.

I wouldn't trust NewEgg reviews :P

For the extra $6 it's a no brainer, go with the SX6000. I have a 6 year old SSD, and it's done 29TB of writes. Don't worry about reliability, you're fine.
