Random system freezes?

I have just installed Ubuntu 17.10 on my workstation PC. It is a mostly stock Dell Optiplex 330 (which i know is insanely old) but my gpu is a Nvidia Geforce GT 730. And I have been experiencing random crashes ever since I installed the card. Any ideas why? If you need any log, ask and I'll skim them of any personal info and post them.

Keep in mind these and desktop freezes not crashes, audio continues playing just fine and the cursor will intermittently move, but no desktop objects are updated. The kernel is still intact in this condition since the SysRQ requests work. My system usually isn't under any type of load during these freezes.

What is the power supply capacity and what does the motherboard say is the max power that can be delivered by the PCIe slot?

305W Power supply and I am unsure where to look to find out the PCIe max volatge / Wattage.

Did you install Nvidia drivers? Uninstall old drivers? Is your 730 the DDR5 or DDR3 version and does it have 1gb or 2gb of VRAM

I installed the latest Nvidia proprietary drivers. I think they are like 387 but I'm away from the PC right now. It is the ddr5 version with 2gb vram

Hmmm, it is possible that if you have the DDR3 version that you may be pulling too much power than your motherboard could supply, but the DDR5 version has a power draw of 25 watts, well within what the manual says is possible. It may be the power supply is just too weak to power it. Nvidia recommends a 300W PSU for it, and you have a 305, but if it's older, it's possible that the PSU is simply inefficient. The GT 710 pulls less power, but not by much. It may be time to look through the error logs.

Okay I can do that. What logs should I look through? Xorg, kernel, or another? Also any specifics to point out. I do have a feeling your right though. I looked through the kernel log and right at the time of the freeze it has a lot of "NVIDIA-GPU" monitors disconnecting and reconnecting errors. I'm gonna add logs in a sec..

EDIT: Logs got wiped for being too old, gonna wait for next freeze then update.

I'm also working on uploading some files to show. This time after the freeze the audio started to show signs of X-runs occuring (Some sort of buffer error causing repeating audio) and eventually the audio stopped. The num lock was froxen since the keyboard is owned by Xorg but the kernel was still somewhat intact since SysRQ still reponded. Brb with the files.

EDIT: Here are the files.

Getting the exact same freezes with audio working here on a new Ryzen Build. Mine is freezing when I try to open more then 3 files in office calc or if I try to format a cell.

Have you tried switching between Xorg and Wayland ? Since I switched back to Xorg, I only freeze with calc where before it would freeze randomly and frequently.

I'll try that and get back soon. Totally forgot Wayland is default now!;)

Some dmesg logs would also be nice to see what the kernel is actually doing under the hood.

Sure! Once the computer crashes again I'll grab the dmesg logs.
