The socket of such card will be x4 long, but your slot is still x1 long. It wont even fit.

Besides, PCIe speed depends on the slowest part, in this case the card. Even if you cut the back of the slot, it will only have PCIe 1.0 x1 speed

if a pcie card/adapter is PCIe rev 1.0a x4 .... but say you put it in a PCIe rev 3.0 x1

Could I get full speeds since the x1 on it is much faster??

Now I'm not sure if your signature is satire or not.

My first question is you said that the card is x4 and the slot is x1. Is that slot speed or slot size that you are referring to?

thats physical size of slot/card

the x1 slots are open back so they will work.. its just i dont know at which speed.

I'm not even sure if x4 cards will work in x1 slots but to not ruin someone's day/night...

It might work, just at PCIe x1 Gen1 speeds if at all.

They could work, depending on the card manufacturer, and so long as there isn't any other components (such as pesky capacitors) in the way...

PCIe-3.0 is backwards compatible, but the way that it works is that it assumes the speed of the slowest component, sort of. It's actually much more complex than that, but to answer your question, stick it in and find out. If it works, It will run at PCIe-1 x1 speeds.

I would put the slower card in the slower slot and the faster card in the faster slot, but what the hell do I know about anything...

if the gigabit card is rev2.0 like I think it is   (have to power it all down sometime later to check)

then it running in the rev3x1 slot should let it run at 500MB/s (even the rev1.0a in the rev3.0x1, should run at 250MB/s)

which is plenty for a dual gigabit card.

the rev1.0a card that im asking about  in the first post is a 4Gb FC hba  (x4 slot).. so putting it in the x8 slot so it can run full speed would be better since im more likely to need the 4Gb bandwidth than the full bandwidth of the dual gigabit card.

edit: just researched and figured out the dual gigabit ethernet card is also a pcie1.0x4..

But i would rather have the FC hba in the x8 slot.

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?
