I'm not sure if this it supposed to be on this forum, it may be in the GPU side but ... anyways

if this thread is not supposed to be on the psu  forum please tell me

I have an MSI 1080 Duke which has a 8 + 6(+2) pin connector

Is it still possible to use the 1080 if only the 8 pin is connected

I want to use the other 6(+2) pin to power another GPU

atm PSU = 550w fsp platnum

Usually the GPU won't power up if it doesn't have both connectors or the computer might fail to boot completely. It might power up but it definitely won't work well if it can't pull all the power it needs to and depending on how the card is wired it might cause other issues.

It's possible but you need to use a connector to hook the two PSUs together and at that point it's just better to buy a better single PSU imo.

just buy a cheap molex to 8 pin connector and you will be good to go.

Microsoft in there infinite wisdom have decided to impose a VRAM cap for games the that use DX9 o.O. May God Bless them those whoever came up with that idea.

Of course not!
Why should they use two connectors if you can use the card with one?!

I don't know any FSP Platinum unit with 550W that comes with only one PCIe connector...

Even the shitty Aurum has two.

The Hydro PT(M) have 4...

Now it's getting rediculous...

If we are talking about two identical PSU with DC-DC, yes it is possible.
Like two Corsair RMx

If we talk about two different ones and/or no DC-DC PSU, then no.

But why do you want that?!
Because you want to destroy your hardware??

What PSU are you talking about??

well because i am a horrible human being?

all jokes aside by cheap i do not mean cheap quality, i mean cheaper than buying a second PSU to power the GPU.

Molex are used for such stuff anyway so why not? you got 2 x molex to 1 x 8 pin connectors .

Yeah, seems that way...

Because maths?!

An 8pin connector is specified for 150W, divide it by 12 gives you 12,5A

And if the PSU doesn't have an 8pin connector or two PCIe connectors although being a 550W, it's a garbage unit that isn't even a real 550W unit!

So we don't even really know what PSU he is talking about.

He can also mean some 20 buck PSU that will kill you if you look at it...

That made me chuckle.

well never bothered with the math cause i never had that problem, i just though they work cause they are available in reputable shops.  Well point taken.

Yers and that has two PCIe connectors.

Where's the problem??

Did you misplace your cable?!

Here you can have a look at the pinout:
