Thinking about an upgrade

Hakka

Currently running an Ivy extreme i74930k @4.4ghz, rampage IV black and 64gb Gskill Ripjaws 1600mhz.

I've been thinking about grabbing a 8700k, Maximus X code, and 32gb Gskill Trident 3200mhz.

8700k will be delidded and watercooled.

Running an Acer X34 3440x1440 monitor and 1080ti.

Current system is pretty good, can max out most games at max settings but there's some games that like core speed/fast ram that have room for improvement.

I've been on the fence about this upgrade for a while now, help me decide one way or the other.

i'd wait for a 8core variant next year unless you got that upgrade itch, ipc gain+15% actual clock gain would be about a 30% upgrade on paper, probably less in games.

is there a firm date for the next gen equivalent of the 8700k?

Honestly I'd probably upgrade in the next few months. You can get an insane amount of money for your X79 motherboard, likely more than enough to replace your current one. The CPU doesn't hold nearly as much value though.

Do you just game? If so, the 8700k should do you for a good number of years. Yes, the next 8 core will be more powerful...but do you really need that power? If you're not doing video work, I highly doubt it.

Mostly gaming and a bit of photoshop. A tiny bit of video but not enough to influence the purchase.

No there are currently rumors that it wont even happen in 2018, afaik.

If all you do and will do is game then the 8700K is a great CPU. Bear in mind though that it is going to now be challenged by the new Ryzens being announced in Las Vegas in just over a week's time and Intel have another generation of CPU's coming out, which you won't be able to upgrade to on the same motherboard.

intel's in a hurry to snuff out anything amd does with ryzen, if amd comes out with zen+ or zen 2 at 4.5ghz, the current gen will not hold at all, 8 core in 2018 is highly likely, i think u can just look at the current 7900x and see how fast they  overclock, then add a bit to it, that's what next gen will look like, i doubt they can hit 5.1 as easily as 8700k, but it is 2 more cores.

i dont really get what you are talking about.

Zen+ and Ryzen2 are completly different things, one which get released 1.quarter 2018 and the other being released in 2019.

Zen+ will be released early 2018 and will be a refresh of AMDs current Ryzen without any drastical architectural changes compared to AMD's current Ryzen CPU's. It will be a version with a different stepping for minor bugfixes and may have a chip with a slightly higher density. Getting 600mhz higher clockspeeds out of nowhere or "from a little density bump" is absolutely unrealistic because the most limiting factor in clockspeeds is currently Ryzens architecture not anything else. A 200mhz bump would be a reallistic clockspeed increase for Zen+ that could be expected.

Same applies to Intel which is stuck at 14nm. If there will be a new flagship release from Intel in 2018 expect it to be an i7 8790k. Same thing with little higher stock clocks, a little more density and yet again maybe 200mhz higher OC capability.

So actually its guaranteed that there wont be any Flagship competition in the Mainstream CPU market in 2018. Until Ryzen2 comes around the corner in 2019, which we know nothing about yet.

I didnt say they were the same thing, and i have little expectation for zen+.
