For 1440p, I'd go with 4GB minimum, though I've had little to no trouble with the "3.5GB" of VRAM that my GTX 970 has at 1440p. So out of the two, get the 280x.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

The 280x will performance better and the extra VRAM can be helpful, although even 3gb isn't ideal for 1440p.

Yup, 4gb is the bare minimum (also for 1080p kinda.. maybe 3gb).

But at WQHD with 4gb, you might have to reduce textures to high or medium.

You#re better off with 6gb or better 8 (GTX 1070 / RX Vega 56 and higher.

1050 ti isn't really suited for 1440p. except you really want to go down to medium or even lower.

Also, the 128 bit Memory bandwidth means a very low memory bandwidth. You might ahve 4gb, but it's quite slow.

Save up for a GTX 1060 6gb at least, then you will have fun~

Or RX 580 8gb.

Not only because of the Memory size, but also raw performance.

Okay, but still: If you had to choose between R9 280x and 1050Ti, what would you take?

If you're not using a Freesync Monitor, GTX 1050 ti.

Both are within like 5-6% performance only (so you won't notice any difference in average).

But the Power consumption is a difference. R9 280X consumes around 150 Watt more than a GTX 1050 ti.

German "Computerbase" tested the 1050 ti, and measured a power consumption of the whole System at 130 Watt~ during Gaming. With a R9 280X in the System, they had 288 Watt.
