depends on where you live :P amd 280x or gtx 770 are in that price range and are both great cards, the 280x would be my choice because of the extra vram.

current system:  i5 2500k @4.5ghz cooled by antec 620 - asrock z77 extreme 4 - 8gb corsair RAM - MSI Twin Frorz 7950 in crossfire - XFX 850w  - Fractal design R4 - samsung 840 120gb ssd - 500gb wd blue hdd - 1440p korean qnix monitor (love it!)

280x is what I would recommend but have fun finding one right now. For your current resolution a GTX 770 would serve you well.

I would recommend the R9 280X. The only thing is good luck finding one in stock. The GTX 770 is good too but I prefer the extra vram on the 280X instead.

Depends on what you are planning to game... my true recommendation would be a R9 280X.

But if you are really bound to that budget then go for a R9 270X or a GTX770.

All these cards will be a strong increase of graphics power anyway.

+1 on R9 280X.  MSI,Asus, and Sapphire are good brands of non reference coolers to choose from.
