Help me learn abrout GPU accelerated video decoding

So recently I posted a thread asking about which CPU to go with for a build for a friend that is doing Video Editing. It was brought to my attention about GPU acceleration during post production. Since then I have been trying to learn more about it and how to impliment this into the build.

 

A few questions popped up that i can't find answers too:

 

1) Which programs offer GPU Accelleration? So far i can only find two; Sony Vegas 12 and Adobe CS6.

 

2) Is it correct to say that CUDA (Nvidia) is not as popular as OpenGL (AMD)? From what i can see, CUDA is only supported in Sony Vegas 12 but OpenGL is supported by both. I am not sure if I have it right that OpenGL refers to AMD cards.

 

3) Which cards are better for GPU Acceleration? From what I have read, people are saying that older cards for both CUDA and OpenGL are better at GPU Acceleration. BUT that only certain older cards support this. So how is a person to pick which is the best card for the dollar to help accelerate?

 

 

Hopefully someone can direct or help educated me on this. Even better if it will help educated someone else as well.

For number two, Both AMD and Nvidia cards support OpenGl

Any card can accelerate to do what ever you are doing, it just depends on the amount of power that you need.

I  would say all adobe creative apps support CUDA acceleration, but it is rumoured that it will also support openCL in the future.

Currently nVidia is the best route to go for GPU accelerated video encoding/decoding!

FX 6300 @ 4.2 Gigahurtz 1.325V ,  ASRock 970 Extreme 4 mobo  ,  Kingston Hyperx Blu 2X4GB @1600Mhz  , Asus GTX 960 DCU ii Black OC  , Hyper 212 Evo , Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB , WD 1 TB caviar Green , Xonar DG sound card , Seasonic M12ii Evo 620W PSU , Corsair 200R case ,4 random case fans.

Well, the current Nvidia Kepler (GK 1XX) architecture is not very well optimised for compute operations.

AMD's GCN is much faster. However, only Nvidia cards support Cuda and OpenCL is supported by both.

It all depends on the software you do from day to day, so if the stuff you use does not support OpenCL, Nvidia is your only option.

Not all programs implement this. By power I mean the graphical output the card can produce. Such as a GTX 660 TI can't run games as high as a FPS as a GTX 780 TI because the 780 has more processing power.

Any program can, you can also do it manually if needed.
