i recently bought a new pc and i wanted to overclock it. (specs):

CPU: i7-8700k

Mobo: ASUS ROG STRIX z370 - F  gaming

RAM: Hyperx fury DDR4 8GB (i'm planning to get more but the prices right now are horrendous :/)

PSU: Corsair RM850x

Cooler: Noctua NH-D14

Here's the issue: I get absurd temps on my CPU. when running small FFS on Prime95 it instantly reaches 100 degrees and throttles down. Is that normal? i'm pretty sure i mounted the cooler correctly, i get around 30 degrees on idle and about 60 while running Blend (Prime95). When i tried overclocking i couldn't get a stable 5.0 GHZ even when i set the voltage to 1.420V. Also i noticed that in CPU-Z  and in BIOS/UEFI the CPU didn't get the voltage i actually set, but  around 0.02V lower. when running Cinnebench the voltage lowered even further, to as far as 1.28 (from 1.40 while i set 1.42 in BIOS) Is all of that normal and i just came last in the sillicon lottery or is something wrong with my CPU? (or i'm just doing something wrong?)

1. Forgot thermal paste?

2. Forgot to remove plastic on cooler?

3. Didn't install properly?

Those are the three things that could be wrong.

Quote me to see my reply!

First of all. Don't use Prime95. It's not good for newer Intel CPUs. Secondly, not all CPUs can OC all the way. You haven't had as good luck as some others in silicon lottery. Thirdly, you should setup LLC (Load Line Calibration). It's purpose is to keep your set voltage stable.

I'm on an NH-D15S and even when I've undervolted my CPU by -0.08 offset I still hit 90c when stress testing with prime95 with AVX @ 4.7GHz and 1.2v. The voltage drops due to the vdroop and if you want to keep the voltages stable you should run LLC, though setting it at a higher level would cause your idle voltage to shoot higher than usual.

This processor runs pretty hot and tbh I don't think you could get better results on air cooling unless you delid the processor. I might be able to get a few degrees lesser once I upgraded my case fans to a higher RPM one but it's still prolly gonna be above 80c with the newer versions of prime95.
