Hello fellow geeks,

I'm getting my self a Ryzen 5 CPU (to give some support to team red) and i just cant decide between Ryzen 1600 and 1600x.

The 1600 comes with the AMD wraith cooler (which a lot of peeps say is really good) but the 1600x has a higher clock speed but doesn't come with the cooler.

I'm getting a new mo-bo and RAM so its gonna cost me some money. I guess my question is, is the 1600x worth the higher price if im not gonna overclock?

(I'm sorry of this questions is frequently asked but i couldn't find it here)

Thanks ^_^

The question to ask yourself is how much value do you place on 300-400MHz? With a MSRP difference of $30USD plus the cost of a decent cooler, another $30USD or more. Many people choose the Non-X and put that saved money towards better ram or gpu. Ram is so expensive right now anyways and Ryzen is picky as hell when it comes to ram. "Samsung B-Die" is something you'll want to research when choosing ram.

Ryzen 5 1600X has a base clock of 3.2/3.6GHz, all cores automatically overclock to 3.4/3.7GHz. Precision Boost will then increase one or two of the coolest cores to 3.6/4.0GHz with XFR taking those same two cores to 3.7/4.1GHz.

FYI - Even though you're not overclocking, it's easy to do 3.7 or 3.8GHz on the 1600's stock cooler. Will often require just a bit more voltage (around 1.30v).

Yeah the X is for those scared of taking a minute overclocking it :P

If you overclock the 1600 it will be a 1600x, it is easy to do so it is worth it but if you're absolutely sure you won't then go with the X ones... then again be warned that to enjoy Ryzen to the most you do NEED to overclock both the memory and CPU.

yep save some money and put it towards your gpu your not going to see appreciable gains from the 1600x in your game play

The 1600 and the 1600X can be overclocked the same way, depentinding on your luck in the silicon lottery ofcourse. BUT the 1600 comes with a decent cooler which is also enough to overclock it to 3.6 to 3.8 GHz. So to me the 1600 is way better than the 1600X.

[never touch a running system]

I would get the highest possible kit you can afford I can assure you that ram speed is Ryzens best friend just make sure they are on your boards QVL

These forums are full of people with memory issues with Ryzen. Even with bios updates offering improved memory compatibility, it's still a nightmare for some. My advice would be to research Samsung B-Die and look at what others are using. What ram are people using with your board? Compare model numbers because even one number off makes a difference.

DDR4-2400 type memory *is* a bottleneck to Ryzen gaming performance if your GPU is also quite fast - so anything from a GTX 1070 and up I would say.

If you use a GTX 1060 or below it won't make much difference as you will hit the GPU bottleneck before hitting the RAM bottleneck in most games.

Yeah, I'm on a RX480 and its the same as the 1060 just for the red team ^-^
