X370 under $200

Go to solution Solved by aisle9,

Yeah, I totally just bought the Taichi.

I know, Taichi. Trust me, I'm thinking about it, but before I drop that kind of money to replace my B350-F Strix, I can't help but notice the lower-priced AsRock boards like the Fatal1ty, the Killer, hell, even the ITX Fatal1ty costs a boatload less...and making my main rig ITX might be fun...

Realistically speaking, how much better is the Taichi? Are the VRMs godlike compared to the mere peasants attached to lesser boards, or are you doing a lot of paying for the look?

Side note, I'm not married to AsRock, but I am a big fan of their products and support.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

why do you want to do this upgrade?

The problem is that many cheaper X370 share the same power delivery as their B350 counterparts. That's why you shoudnt buy them.

I'm running a B350 board and don't want it to blow up, basically.

The longer version is that I know B350 VRMs aren't ideal for Ryzen 7 overclocking. My PC is being weird, and has started to randomly freeze or fail to boot up all the way. I've ruled out the PSU itself (Corsair RM650i) by testing with a different unit, which leads me to strongly believe that it's the mobo causing it. My general rule in situations like this is to calmly panic, buy a higher end replacement, then RMA the original and sell it when it comes back fixed. I'm between "calmly panic" and "buy a higher-end one".

I can get the Taichi board for about $150 after using Amazon gift cards. If it truly is the best of the best X370 boards, I'm all over it. If there's better out there or if there are equally good boards with equally good VRMs for less money, I'm all ears.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

it's barely 6 months and b350s are already failing? i was thinking about ryzen builds b4 coffee lakes came out but it didn't make sense to go all out cause the cpus would bottleneck the 1080ti. Thought about budget builds and the b350 seems too janky.

Hope the Taichi will last you for years. Asrock is a league above the other brands this gen.
