upgrade g4560 to i7 7700K or change mobo and buy 8th gen intel or ryzen

I currently have a

- 1440p/140Hz monitor

- asus b150m-a

- g4560 with hyper212x

- rx 580 8Gb

- 8Gb ram, upgrade to 16 soon

 

Since my recent GPU upgrade makes my CPU the bottleneck in some games I want to upgrade it. Would you recommend a new mainboard and a ryzen/8th gen intel or should I rather stick to my current mainboard and buy the now cheaper i7 7700K or other options?

 

I use my PC mainly for Gaming and Video Editing and some game developing.

Yes get the cheapest z370 you could possible find and pair it with the i7 8700, you'll get miles more performance than the i7 7700k which can't be overclocked on your mobo.

I don't disagree with your post, but why the 8700 over the 8700K?

I mean, the 7700K is still great for gaming.  Hell, so is a 6700K.  I would recommend finding a good deal on one and buy it, it's cheaper than buying a new mobo and Ryzen 7 or Coffee Lake i7

If you want to save money, I'd personally go with a 7700 non-k or some alternative. It's a substantial upgrade, cost effective and the money saved can be used to upgrade a generation or two down the line.

I thought you have seen my explanation already, for the first time the i7 8700 is identical to the stock i7 8700k and overclocking that extra 400mhz makes absolutely no difference at 1440p and 4k as you'll get GPU bound even with the 1080 Ti as this processor is so fast.

 

This means you can have the very same identical performance of someone rocking the i7 8700k 5ghz but sooo much cheaper and hassle free, no need for a high end overclockable motherboard like a Prime-A to ensure 5ghz, no need for a high end AiO like minimum of a Corsair H110i V2 or even delid.

 

With the i7 8700 just about any cheapo motherboard suffices and the z370 chipset is still justified for memory overclocking that benefits more than that CPU overclock. So you do something like I have a cheap board, a Hyper 212X for soundless cooling (much better than the stock cooler) sufficient and cheap... no delid needed... the savings are real, it actually will be even cheaper and better performing than the i5 8600k at 5ghz.

 

See the benchmarks and the host speech till the end and you'll see how pointless has become overclock the i7 at least for current Pascal line up as is, already set the time:
