Windows 7 or Windows 10 in 2017

ChiefRobb
Go to solution Solved by Lurick,

Well, there isn't any official support for the 7xxx or 8xxx series Intel chips on Windows 7, or even 8/8.1 (I think) so it's a shot in the dark as to if you'll have problems or not with just the install.

I'm thinking about switching back to windows 7 because of how many random problems I have with windows 10. What am I losing if I go the direction I'm currently considering? Also, I understand that windows 10 has dx12 support and windows 7 does not, but until a number of games adopt this I'm not terribly worried. Also, I'm going to do the install when I upgrade to my 8700k later tonight. Anything conflicting? Thanks!

You should give 10 a trial run when you upgrade your system, your problems might have just been a bad install, bad update, or a conflict with the OS and hardware/platform specific driver. If it works seemlessly, keep 10. If it doesn't, give 7 a trial run.

Why did you come to this world?

The lack of official support from Intel for Windows 7 on newer Intel CPUs doesn't really mean anything, because newer Intel CPUs still run on the x86 chipset, and so will run an x86 OS. And newer Intel CPUs run Windows 7 just fine.

DirectX 12 isn't very important, but if you want it, then it's only available on Windows 10. That said, Windows 7 has Vulkan support, and Vulkan is the same technology as DirectX 12, only non-proprietary, and made by a different company, Khronos Group. Many upcoming games are being designed to use Vulkan instead of DirectX 12, probably because Vulkan is multi-platform and open-sourced, making it attractive over DirectX 12.

Some of what you'd not get if you install Windows 7 instead of Windows 10: UWP, DirectX 12, mounds of telemetry, OS settings resetting, forced updates, in-OS ads, lots of bugs.

Some of what you'd not get if you install Windows 10 instead of Windows 7: increased stability and reliability, increased privacy, increased control over the OS, a more effective start menu.
