i am building a pc and am stuck for choices for the cpu,

this computer will be used for these items and will have 4gb ram and using the on board motherboard graphics (they don't need better), also will be using windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

  • web browsing and the occasional youtube video
  • word doccuments and excel
  • email
  • family photos
  • home movie editing (very rare)

I was thinking about an am3 socket athlon II x3 450 but im not sure.

what do you think would suit this build

I'd go with an APU.

My build:

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.0GHz Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 RAM: 12GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 Storage: Samsung 120GB 840 SSD Cooling: Corsair H100 with Noctuas Case: Fractal Arc Midi R2

For this build you can go with either an Intel Core i3 or an AMD APU (Quad Core). The price for both platforms is about the same, when pared with a decent motherboard. The i3 has better performance per clock, but has worse on board graphics, however those are still good enough to drive a 1080p screen and watch FullHD movies. A quad core AMD APU is about the same price as the i3, but has better graphics, which will allow some occasional games to be played, fore example, Counter-Strike, DOTA 2, etc. I would personally go with either of these, the FX 6300 is way too powerful for this system.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 - 3900x @ 4.4GHz with a Custom Loop | MBO: ASUS Crosshair VI Extreme | RAM: 4x4GB Apacer 2666MHz overclocked to 3933MHz with OCZ Reaper HPC Heatsinks | GPU: PowerColor Red Devil 6900XT | SSDs: Intel 660P 512GB SSD and Intel 660P 1TB SSD | HDD: 2x WD Black 6TB and Seagate Backup Plus 8TB External Drive | PSU: Corsair RM1000i | Case: Cooler Master C700P Black Edition | Build Log: here

AMD APU is probably the way I'll go; if you're really trying to save some money get an A6 5400K, so the previous generation with a cheapo FM2 board, but from a respectable brand. Reason for choosing Trinity over Richland? Well Richland based APUs are basically tinkered Trinity APUs they have a few more features and a faster clock speed for the same wattage, but at the end of the day you save money by getting the previous generation and the performance you are losing will be minimal.

Personally I would avoid AM3 socket if you're going to be using onboard because the graphics that come with it are just abysmal and chances are you won't be getting a reputable motherboard brand, which is something I tend to go for in case I have any issues with the board I know that their warranty services are dependable. As for Intel I don't think they are really in your budget unless you go for some older CPUs but the integrated performance would be a lot weaker.

Wait for the new AMD Kaveri to come out and buy that. Socket FM2+

It is not motherboard graphics, it's onboard CPU+GPU on a processor chip, i am not being a ****, i just want to help you get this, i do this to my family that does not understand that they need this, if they don't want to spend money on a dedicated GPU.

Do not go with Intel at this price point, because you get less for your money.

If you can get an SSD at least 120 GB and use it for OS and basic programs, buy a standard HDD of 500GB to store other data and potentially some games.

For ram i would suggest you go with 8 gigs, and always go in a configuration of 2 smaller capacity ram sticks vs 1 large one, tested it myself, dual channel operation made my older PC more snappy. You can get 4 GB if you want to save money, but do try to have 2x2 gb sticks vs 1x4gb.

If you need the PC right now buy a new FM2+ motherboard, it is backwards compatible with the "old" APU-s and you have an upgrade path in the future.

Hope this helps and good luck!!
