Looking for a horror game

Are there any good horror games on Steam that don't rely on jump scares, but on...I don't know, other types of scaring? Does that make sense? Like, the scary part is what your brain thinks, not what the game does. I know it's hard to explain, but that's the best I can do. Thanks!

 

EDIT: I've also never played a horror game because I'm a pussy, so consider me a noob if there is some terminology or something that I need to know.

I've heard that game is "good" because it's a meme, not because the gameplay is good or whatever. Have a heard incorrectly? Also, what's it about?

Alien isolation it's good. Alien Colonial Marines is also good too. I'm also a fan of Resident Evil. 4 and 5 are my favorites. I think Doom can be both action and horror. High difficultly level and playing through the first time is a rush.

 

Fear has always been great.

 

There was also a game I saw a while ago, something about escaping an insane asylum with only a flashlight on a smart phone. Looked good, but I don't remember the name.

Doom seems more like a shooter with jump scares IMO. As for the RE games, I thought those involved jump scares as well, but I guess I'm wrong.

Full Horror: SCP Containment Breach, Amnesia (The Dark Descent), Detention, Observer, Fran Bow. I'd list Fran Bow as having the most complete story of these.

 

I'm hesitant to put Inside and Limbo into the "horror", but I believe that they are both great games with a slight horror theme.

the first 4 hours of Resident evil 7 scared the living sh*t out of me

the evil within 1 is pretty intense as well

amnesia the dark decent is a classic fps horror game with flight not fight mechanics. highly recommend even though its old its still high on my list for top horror games.
