PC upgrade help request. All help is greatly appreciated.

testudoaubreii

Hello.

Let me begin with country and budget: US and $750.

I have a PC that I want to upgrade into a workstation (with a little 1080p@60 gaming time to time, but mostly After Effects, Photoshop and Dreamweaver).

This is what I have now:

i3 6100

Gigabyte H110 LGA 1151 microITX

8GB 2400 RAM

EVGA 500 watt PSU

Thermaltake V1 microITX case

I want to obviously keep all I can. I was just looking to get some advice and/or suggestions on a good upgrade path for what the above stated usage. I can use my budget, but would not be upset if it came in under budget :).

Thank you in advance for all help!

Thank you very much. I think I need to go with a i7 6xxx series. Is that correct?

Can I ask you something else? What if I where to choose a laptop? I can get a Lenovo Y720 i7 7700HQ/8GB RAM/256 GB SSD for $899.99. Would that be powerful enough or should I just look into the desktop upgrade?

you can always get a new motherboard, no need to stick to the old one. that way you can get a much better cpu with a better upgrade path.

not worth it unless you want the laptop for portability, you can get much better performance upgrading your desktop.

I agree with this path, and productivity will shine on this one

"Make it future proof for some years at least, don't buy "only slightly better" stuff that gets outdated 1 year, that's throwing money away" @pipoawas

-Frequencies DON'T represent everything and in many cases that is true (referring to Individual CPU Clocks).

Mention me if you want to summon me sooner or later

Spoiler

My head on 2019 :

Note 10, S10, Samsung becomes Apple, Zen 2, 3700X, Renegade X lol

aftereffects and photoshop will work better on intel cpus, and the mobo he picked isn't compatible with the core v1.
