Budget PC

Guest

Background

I have a GTX 1050 TI, and a 500 Watt (Ultra USP or something) power supple (a bit dodgy, I know..) and we are trying to build a PC around this for gaming. We are keeping the budget as low as we can.

We have a 1600 x 900 monitor, mouse and keyboard, and case.

The games that will be played are likely Doom 2016, source engine games, and Dawn of War 2004.

I was thinking of going for the newest Pentium, 8 GB ram, a 30-50$ motherboard, and see what hard drives we have. (we have a few so I'll keep Hard drives out of the build too.)

I don't know if I should look toward the i3, or Ryzen as I'm trying to get a good price to performance, but not spend TOO much.

Findings:

Pentium processors:

Skylake G4400 at $54.99 dual core.

Kabylake G4560 at $87.93 dual core w/ hyperthreading

Kabylake G4620 at $99.99 dual core w/ hyperthreading

all LGA 1151 sockets.

Ryzen 3:

1200 at $109.99 quad core.

AM4

All CPU come with heat syncs.

Intel motherboard is 50~ dollars

Ryzen motherboard is  also 50~ dollars

I'm only finding DDR4 ram at 10+ dollars a gigabyte. (80~ for 8 gb. 50~ for 4 gb)

Questions:

What processor do you think I should go with?

Is there anywhere I can find new ram for less than $10+ a gigabyte?

The user may do CAD work on this machine. There are no plans to upgrade this computer.

It seems I'm looking at (100 + 50 + 80) about 230 dollars.

Are there any cheaper older gen i5 that would allow use of ddr3 that isn't much more expensive?

The only lga 1151 motherboards that accept ddr3 ram on newegg are over 250 USD.

Since there will be some CAD work being done, the Ryzen 3 will be best as it has 4 physical cores. It won't be the best for gaming however. The best gaming CPU will be one of the Kabylake Pentiums. You cannot buy DDR4 RAM cheaper, it's just the state of the market. If you want to go older gen, you'll be buying second hand. If you can get your hands on a i5-2500K for a good price or an i5 Ivy Bridge CPU and motherboard, I'd go with that. Those older i5's will still be excellent for gaming - especially if you can overclock them.

Why does everyone suggest the G4560 it will only will hinder you in the future. Intel already forced everyone to switch boards for coffee lake. the 1151 platform will only let you use 6-7 gen processors.

Go the intel way only if you can find used.

Zen is good for a few more years.

Perhaps you could even wait 1-2 months for Ryzen 2 to launch and re-evaluate your options...
