Imagine the following situation and please let me know what the solution is to this problem and some explanation about how you solved this.

 

The cost of a gallon of gasoline is $3.25 less than 2 times the cost of a gallon of diesel. If a gallon of gasoline costs $3.95, what is the cost of a gallon of diesel?

I came out to at the diesel would cost at least $7.90, since the gasoline cost $3.25. $3.25 x 2 = $6.50, but that's not nearly as relevant as the cost of gasoline being $3.95/gallon. $3.95 x 2 = $7.90 so logically, the gallon of diesel cannot cost more than $7.90 as the cost of a gallon of gasoline is less than half the price of a gallon of diesel.

 

EDIT: I am aware this answer isn't exact, but that's what I came out to using mostly logic.

GG = 2 x GD - 3.25

GG = 3.95

 

=> 3.95 = 2 x GD - 3.25

 

Solve for GD.

This can be solved using basic algebra.

 

We'll use the variable "g" for gasoline and the variable "d" for diesel.

 

We know that the cost of gasoline is $3.95. We also know that the cost of gasoline is $3.25 less than 2 times the cost of diesel. In other words, the cost of gasoline is double the cost of diesel, minus $3.25. We can model this situation as the following:

 

g = 2d - 3.25

In words: "g" as in the cost of gasoline, is equal to double the price of diesel, minus 3.25.

 

Knowing that the cost of gasoline "g" is $3.95 we can solve for the cost of diesel "d".

 

I've put the solution in the spoiler, I highly recommend you attempt to solve it yourself first given this information. Please remember, the important thing is not the answer, it's understanding how you get to the answer.

7.2 = 2d                           Divide each side by 2

3.6 = d                             And there you have it!

 

Therefore, the price of diesel is $3.60.

I am thinking that the answer would be 141 although I am not sure if that is correct.

Subtract what they have;

They have 872 so far.

Divide by the days they have to reach said goal.

They have 8 days left to get it.

"3.25 less"
this means that you add a base of 3.25 to the price of gasoline, so 3.25+3.95= 7.20.
"less than 2 times the cost"
this means price of diesel 2x = 7.20, so 7.20/2 = diesel
diesel = 3.60
