Yes, in multiple ways. A recent vulnerability in Intel's ME, for example, allows you to take full control of a computer, regardless of formats, without it showing any sign that that is the case, just by plugging in a rigged usb drive.

You have to buy a new cpu if they take control of your ME, if not a new computer altogether since from there the attacker may have planted other malware anywhere on your system.
