What is wrong with my ASUS PG279Q?

Hello everyone,

 

I have a question about my ASUS PG279Q. I have had it for about a year now, with no (perceived) problems. I set it up back then and never thought about it again.

 

Now today by coincidence I was looking at my display settings and was shocked to see that the display was running at "G-SYNC Mode DisplyPort 2560x1440p@60hz"

I almost couldn't believe that I wasnt using the whole potential of the monitor theis whole time, as I was pretty sure I set it up at 144hz back when I got it.

So I tried to change it to the appropriate 144hz setting, but then the monitor started to act up. Refresh rate changes did not happen instantly by the press of the appropriate button, but only after a serious delay (15-30s). Once it turned off completely and wouldn't turn back on -> I had to unplug it to get it to work again.

I finally got it to the setting "G-SYNC Mode DisplyPort 2560x1440p@144hz", tried it out ingame and everything worked fine. Now im back at my desktop browsing and just saw that it switched back to 60hz.... On the positive side, the refresh rate changes are instant again now.

 

I am completely at a loss what could be causing this. Any ideas?

Maybe it isn't the monitor?  Maybe it's your GPU?  GPU drivers maybe?

I'm am traveling in shallow water here as my experience is not very deep when it comes to matching monitors with graphics cards so I'm just swimming here but I'm thinking that if a "game" is written or produced to be run at 144hz but the graphics card only supports 60hz, then even if the monitor supports 144, it will only run the game at 60.  Not sure if what I'm saying here is what I'm thinking but I hope that you get what I'm trying to say.  My monitor supports 144 but my card only puts out 60, at least that is the line of thinking.

Nah - thats what the GSYNC is for. Also most of the games run at 90-150fps.

Guess I need to go back to my swimming instructor and get some more lessons.  Thanks for helping me get back in to the deep end of the pool.
