i7 7700k in z170 chipset?

so i am thinking on upgrading my 6700 to a 7700k. but my motherboard has a z170 chipset and im not sure if it can take the 7700k. the motherboard is the asus maximus viii formula, and i dont really have the money to buy a new motherboard.

i spent $3500(23,000dkr.) on building my pc and i only play csgo on low settings..

Yes, it can, just update the BIOS if it isn't already updated.

I wouldn't call this an upgrade though. It's almost exactly the same chip just a little better binned.

i was thinking on getting the 8700k but the motherbaord cant run that right, or does it also just need a update?

I would just try to flip your mobo and CPU together and then "upgrade" to an 8700K when the B-class mobos come out in December.

Out of personal experience going from an i7 6700 to the i7 7700k will make so little difference at 1080p and zero difference at 1440p and 4k that this is quite pointless... you'll invest money to have the very same end user experience there is no miracle here both are 4c/8t on 14nm... Overclocking the CPU nowadays only makes a difference at 1080p with a high end GPU, Vega 64, GTX 1080 / 1080 Ti level... otherwise you'll run into GPU limitations regardless.

I call it money wasting, keep saving for the 8c/16t 10nm i7 9700k on z390 chipset.

The 8700k needs a 3 series chipset to work. You could just get a maximus X Hero.

I get it, but you would be wasting your money "upgrading" the CPU without the mobo. That's why I recommend waiting, then pulling the trigger on the upgrade.

No. The IX is only for Z270/7700k. Z370/8700K is not backwards compatible with the other models. Save your money. Computer parts aren't going anywhere any time soon. You said it was for you, not for anyone else. Just enjoy what you have and upgrade it in a few months when pricing for the 8th gen comes down. You may also realize that the X/IX isn't the best solution for you within that time. Look at all your solutions before you pull the trigger because you will regret your decision if you pull it too early.

Most all boards in the Z chipset line are good at overclocking. the formula is simply "better" because of the liquid ports for the mosfets and power delivery (as well as on some models the chipset). However if you aren't custom cooling out of the gate, it's a waste of $300 when you could get a cheaper board from, say, Asrock, and get comparable performance.

It makes no sense. You wanted to get 7700K/ 8700K but no money for motherboard then you're going for custom liquid cooling? I'd rather you sell whatever you have, get 8700/8700K with Z370 motherboard and slap a stock/ average cooler it will be money well spent.

You're stuck with 6700K or 7700K (if you upgrade your BIOS) upgrade path with your current motherboard. If you decide to go 8700K, no doubt you'll need Z370 motherboard.

You are better of creating a new thread with you system spec(motherboard etc) and it would be easier to help you there.
