Hey guys. So back in like late 2016, I started to buy parts for my computer that I was going to make videos and play games with at 1080p, 60fps or above, settings around or above high. I'd also be doing some light video editing in Premiere Pro, nothing crazy, maybe even dappling in some streaming. The CPU I was going to use was the Intel Core i5 6500. However I don't know what happened, I just kinda stopped caring and fell off. I want to finish the build, but now Ryzen is everywhere, and people are lauding it in terms of price to performance. Like look at this CPU Benchmark result http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-6500-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-1600/3513vs3919. You think it'd be a no-brainer to go with the Ryzen, right? Here's the issue. I already bought an Intel Motherboard, the MSI B150M Mortar to be specific. My question is, should I just suck it up and pay more to get less performance with the Intel CPU and treat this as a learning experience or something like that? Or do I sell the Intel motherboard and try to get an AMD one. Right now, this is what I've got:

Motherboard: MSI B150M Mortar - 69.99 on 10/31/2016

Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo 29.99 on 8/29/16

Case - Corsair SPEC-03 - 56.98 on 8/29/16

Storage - Seagate Barracuda ST4000DM005 4TB - $100

Samsung 850 Evo 500gb - $147

PSU - EVGA 500 BV - $15

I'd need to buy an upgrade kit for the Evo fan, or buy a different fan altogether. What do you guys think? Thank you to whoever helps out!

What about an i7-6700 or i7-7700, locked, from the used market?

hell nah not tryna spend more than $200 on CPU. I could find the i5 6500 for 190 most places. I'm also tryna get a 1060, probably the 3gb. Linus said in his most recent GPU video that it's not that much of a difference between 3gb and 6gb for the $50 price difference, but it probably will matter for video editing. To be fair, I probably shouldn't have spent as much as I did on storage, but I was probably gonna upgrade sooner or later anyway.

There are quite a few 6700 CPUs going for $200-215 on eBay. Just sayin', the extra threads would be worth it to you.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I found a few. I'll give it a look. Would selling that Intel motherboard and trying to get an AMD one be too much trouble though?

Trouble or not depends on whether you look at it as a hassle or enjoying your hobby.

Generally speaking, like the @aisle9 mentioned, grabbing a used i7-6700 or 7700 (might need BIOS update) is probably the most convenient. However, Ryzen is also a great option to consider if you manage to rid your B150 motherboard.

I've noticed you didn't list any memory kits. A tip would be Ryzen normally runs better on higher frequency kits which translates to higher cost. Intel on the other hand is fine with most if not all kits.

You can sell anything, just a question of how much and how long will it take. B150 isn't exactly an "in demand" chipset right now. Another thing to consider is that with Ryzen, the bare minimum RAM speed you'd want to consider is 2666. Bare minimum. I highly recommend going higher, which gets pricey. With B150, you're locked into DDR4-2133, which is almost kinda sorta a little bit less rapey on your wallet.

I'd probably go with an i7-6700. All told, it'll probably cost you a little less than a complete switch to Ryzen would, and it'll be a lot less of a pain in the ass than trying to sell off the B150 would be.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I was going to get some DDR4-2133 or 2400 memory. It's good to know that Ryzen demands higher memory clocks thank you. I wouldn't have known because I've heard only praise for Ryzen. Really sucks how inflated RAM prices are. When I was first starting out, DDR4 hadn't fully cemented itself yet, and you could find 16gb of DDR3 for like $80. Now every RAM of every speed is marked up AF

If I were to pick up a Ryzen CPU, do you guys know how the stock cooler fairs? General consensus states that an aftermarket cooler is usually quieter than a stock cooler, but times may have changed and I can't find anyone who has spoken about the stock cooler's volume. What do y'all know?

Depends on the CPU and the cooler it comes with. The Wraith Spire is pretty quiet at stock speeds. It can get you to 3.7-3.8 on most chips before things get toasty, but it does get loud at those speeds. The Wraith Stealth is not really much of an overclocker, though it's still light years ahead of the Intel stock cooler, and it's also pretty quiet at stock speeds.

i know skylake doesn't come with stock coolers and kaby lake i think that doesn't either. I already have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

so if I run Ryzen on DDR4 2133 or 2400 is Ryzen gonna work really poorly?

i7-6700 and 7700 does come with stock cooler. Only the overclockable K (6700K, 7700K) variants does not come with cooler.

Unlocked Intel CPUs don't come with a stock cooler. The garden variety Pentiums, Celerons and locked Core processors still come with an adorable little slab of aluminum with a loud, crappy fan strapped to it. If you're buying a used 6700 on eBay, assume that it doesn't come with one unless the seller states otherwise.

No, not necessarily. It'll just run much, much better on 2666 or higher. I'm running 3466 RAM at 3200MHz, and it's night and day vs. running that same RAM at 2133 or 2400. Memory speed is very important on Ryzen.

Yes. I'd get at 3000MHz for Ryzen.

Used processors are pretty safe to buy, especially locked.

i gotcha. I'm probably gonna go for that. I feel like outright switching to AMD would be too drastic of a change. A lot of these offers I'm seeing on Ebay are auctions, they're probably gonna go way over $200. If I can't find an i7, I might just have to go with an i5 6500, but whatever. That's still good enough.

Thank you! I'm still gonna do some research on how much a Ryzen switch would actually cost though? They don't overheat like how the AMD FX 9590 chips did back in the day right?

The 9590 was a forest fire disguised as a highly-binned 8350 chewing up 250W under load. That thing could literally set your motherboard on fire, and there are videos on YouTube of it doing so.

Ryzen chips draw far, far less power, and generate a lot less heat. You needed a good AIO just to boot the 9590. With a good AIO on Ryzen, you're probably looking for a high overclock.
