I will be playing games & also playing on emulators as well. I dont do video editing or any of those sorts. Which will suit me more?
I plan to play on 1080p 60hz for now but will upgrade to maybe 144hz or even 4k in a few years

Intel for emulation and gaming. You should go for 2560x1080@100Hz.

If you invest in a ryzen system, you will most likely be stuck below 100hz when veiwing you monitor options. criteria for buying intel would be "lots of money, 144hz monitor, gtx 1080 or higher" ect. but if you want a decent budget build that will last you just as long (and you can overclock) go with the 1600. if you plan on gaming at 4k, a 1080/ti is justifiable. the 1600 will do better at streaming and other such things, but 5 years in the future when every gpu you buy will be dependent on cpu clock speed for maximum performance, you will want to upgrade. amd for budget/ 4k, intel for high refresh rate and high budget

Short answer is the i5 8400.

Both will easily do 1080p 60 FPS (Given an adequate GPU and/or game settings) but since you won't be using more productivity apps (this is where Ryzen wins at times) and as an active gamer you might want higher refresh rate at one point, it's nicer to have that option open with the 8400.

at that price you might as well pick up an i7 7700k or 6700k (depending on where you buy it)

If i could SQUEEZE an extra 100 for an 8700k, would it be worth it

I would stick with the 8600K for now as Intel has a precedence for two revisions per socket on the consumer line.

because imo a 10% overall gain is not $100 in my eyes. To others that actually do require that extra horsepower, by all means. However, as you stated you wont be doing anything cpu intensive, which doesnt require top of the line hardware

Woah woah hold on: an 8600k is far better than a 7700k I don't know where that is coming from: 6 actual cores > 4 cores/8 threads.

Yes, I know that the 8600K is much MUCH better. However, Im speaking from a strictly price to performace standpoint. As he said, He does not video edit. This means that there is no reason to get a 8700K if he isnt going to use it to its full extent, ie vdeo editing/blender

Save the hundred and get your some faster RAM and a larger SSD. There's no proof yet, but Ice Lake should be octa-cores on the same V2 socket as CFL.

So when intel launches their next CPU, its gonna be like the same with AMD where it will be on the same socket?

We don't have much reason to believe otherwise. And if Intel doesn't keep the same socket 1151v2, there'll be hell to pay from a large portion of their market.

....Right, the 8600k fits far better then, it's not on a dead platform, it has 2 more physical cores (far more useful than HT), etc.
