CPU and GPU - Huge bottleneck?

Go to solution Solved by This_guy1998,

You should be fine, yes the CPU is a bottleneck, but if you can deal with it for a little while you will still get a performance bump. If you are comfortable to play around with overclocking the gpu and maybe the BCLK clock on the CPU then you can get the most performance you can for that chip. I bumped up my BCLK clock from 3.2 to 3.5 GHZ on my Xeon (comparable to a i5 6500 or 6600) when it was still in my main rig, along with overclocking the GPU and I got decent performance.

Hey guys!

So next week Im going to upgrade some parts in my PC, Ram and my Gpu etc. Well the problem is, I have an i5 6400 2.7Ghz CPU which is pretty bad which I will upgrade in a half year later Maybe. (I dont have enough money rn)

My Gpu will be the gtx 1070 and Rn I have 960. So its a pretty big jump.

So how big will this bottleneck be?

Have a great day

Shouldn't be too bad, depending on what you use it for.

Why do you say your 6400 is bad?

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

the I5 will bottleneck but you are still going to get pretty good framerates

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

A 1070 and a 6400 will work just fine, don't worry. My 7500 runs a 1080 without problems, sure I might have gotten 10 fps more with a 7700k, but the pricedifference wasn't worth it.

To reduce the bottleneck give overclock a go if you feel comftable playing around with your settings. Otherwise, it shouldn't be to bad.

AFAIK the 6400 is a locked SKU,overclocking sadly disabled.

Any bottleneck would be minor, it is a rather decent CPU. Unless you plan to run AC:Origins with the CPU hogging DRM or Civ games all day you will notice almost no difference.

Ah Okay! I will mostly use it for games like witcher 3 and Destiny 2 so it shouldnt be so bad. I also want to upgrade by CPU as quick as possible But it will take a while.

I want to overclock Both to get the best out of Both!
