Any thoughts on the Elephone S8?

IAmAndre

Hi,

I just found out about this phone as there are sales on Chinese websites at the moment. Take a look at this  : http://www.elephonestore.com/elephone-s8-triple-bezel-less-display-deca-core-android-smart-phone-128gb.html

It's a 6" $200-ish borderless phone with a 2K display (or whatever it's called), 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. I found a few reviews online, including a French one that's almost half an hour long (being bilingual has its advantages). Reviews are generally positive, the display is gorgeous and the overall performance is on par with middle-range phones. It also comes with Android 7 Nougat, but the fact that it isn't Google-certified is intriguing, though some users report that most apps work fine, including Netflix.

Here is the review from TrustedReviews : http://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/elephone-s8

It's currently available at slightly over $200 on Chinese websites. Do you think I should go for it? By the way, I would like to suggest it as a review on LTT. Is there an official topic to do it?

Thanks

I want to buy it to review. 7.6k subs aint enough to request lmao. But yeah I wanna check it out as my friend Rob has had the P8K and P9K from Elephone and ROM support is awesome!

Good to know. I didn't know that brand until a couple hours ago.

Aha yeah he has installed new ROMs and customised the nuts off of it. One thing to note. He had to return his P9K 6 times (yes, not a miss print!) because of maufacturing defects from faulty power buttons to the SIM reader plain not working.

Well i'd expect a backdoor or malware on it, even though they state there isn't any.

MTK SoC's arent the best but the X20 i've heard is pretty decent, I'd be ready to root and rom the phone.

Other than that i've heard its pretty decent for the price.

That's something I can't afford to do. I buy a new phone like once every 2-3 years so I'd rather get something reliable (like my trusty Moto G3).

I'm not here to advertise my channel but if you're on a budget I can give you advice c: Checked out a BUNCH of phones (and recorded in 4k) over the past 2 years.

Why would they state otherwise anyway? :)

I'm not into rooting and custom ROM's though, but I might give it a try. Any idea how I can suggest LTT to review it?

I would contact either Nick Light or Taran by tweeting them on their official handles c:

Theres already a few reviews, why do you need linus to do it?

there is a thread somewhere to ask linus to review stuff, idk where it is though.

Just want to see it LTT-approved

I couldn't find the thread either. Maybe Twitter is the way to go then. Fingers crossed/

LTT didn't even mention the Xiaomi Mi Mix or Mi Mix 2 which is a more prominent brand and was the pioneer in full screen phones...

Anyways they don't take requests just so you can make a purchasing decision. They don't even specialise in phone reviews. So I suggest you look elsewhere.

Actually, Sharp sorta beat a lot of bigger names to the trend way back then with the Aquos Crystal.

Xiaomi modernized the thing and changed the materials from plastic to ceramic

Good point. But they also reviewed a lot of noname Chinese products and Kickstarter projects. The last VR headset they reviewed is a good example. Also, this is half the price of the Mi Mix 2

Well it's always worth suggesting, not requiring.
