8700K clock speed fluctuating constantly

It's fluctuating like mad at IDLE. It's at STOCK atm, lowered voltage to adaptive at 1.28v with offset of 0.03v, temperatures were waaaay too high for stock speeds so that's why I under-volted it. LLC is at L5. These are what I changed in the BIOS.

High performance, disable C States and get rid of speedstep.

What are your temps with stock speeds and voltages? These chips run HOT. What cooler do you have?

well i just played PUBG for around hour and a half and i was averaging 56c. 1.28v. I have a H100i V2.

i could probably lower the voltage a little bit more.

That's definitely not a bad temp. If you set manual vcore to something like 1.2 you can/should be able to get 4.6ghz or so and create about the same amount of heat

I'm guessing you mean I overclock the chip to 4.6ghz at 1.2v? will it even boot at that speed and voltage? xD

If you're wanting to squeeze a bit of extra power out of the system, you betcha! I'm doing that right now (though with an i5 8600k. Been rock solid!

Is that your Vcore or the VID? Use HWMonitor. I was confused as well until I realized that Vcore was holding steady but VID (basically what the CPU thinks it needs and is generally OVERKILL) was similar.

My settings are XMP on, Multicore enhancement off, LLC (load line calibration) set to auto), sync all cores to 4.6ghz, manual Vcore of 1.17. With the manual Vcore and auto LLC, the Vcore drops low to 1.17 when the system isn't being used at it's max capacity. Will boost to 1.184 if needed and then will peak in Battlefield 1 at 1.2vcore.

so you mean to say your cpu is running 4.6 constantly without it dropping down if its idle?

wait what, mine just stays at 4.6 regardless of the load :(

intel speedstep is ON

manual voltage at 1.17v

LLC is at Level 6

Sync all core to 46

C states are all ON

its not constantly at 4.6 but it still fluctuates like there's no tomorrow.

hm.... there must be something up. Is the cpu locked at that speed in the bios? it seems to be overtemping and slowing down....

yeah, the ratio is at 46 for ALL cores. the temps fluctuate too then goes back to normal. i dont know if its a problem with water coolers but i never had that problem when i had an air cooler with a 2500k OC'ed to 4.5ghz.

Temperature fluctuations: that's totally normal. Had that on both my i7 5820k which had a Corsair H100i. With hyper efficient cores, core temps are constantly changing so seeing rapid fluctuations is generally normal (unless youre idling at like 35c and shooting up to like 75-85 and then back down)... That's a different story and let me know if that's the case.

For overclocking: this is what I did: make sure that LLC is set for auto. Manually set voltage for 1.18 to start. Sync all cores/force all cores to say like 4.6ghz. Make sure the Multicore ehancement is off/disabled. For my i5 8600k, I set the Vcore to 1.16 and have the LLC to auto so when it goes to my 4.5ghz across all cores overclock, it'll automatically increase the voltage to like 1.184 under it's max load (using the higher LLC when necessary) but coming down to a much lower and stable voltage when not running at 100% capacity!

Let me know if you have ANY more questions, I'm happy to help
