Looking for an upgrade

Go to solution Solved by GibbStar,

Thank you for the suggestions i will keep all them in mind.

Looking to upgrade my computer, just for money to splurge. At the moment I have :

CPU : i5-4590

GPU : Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

Motherboard : Asus Z97-A LGA1550

Memory : 16gb DDR3 1600

I am wanting an i7 cpu, and one that will last me a while. I am not going to overclock, so please give suggestions. This will be for gaming only. I am also in need of a cooler to go with said i7 cpu. So please suggest one aswell, if the cpu doesn't come with one.

Motherboard?

You can just reuse the one you have.

Unless you mean you want to get the 8700. In which case I'd just recommend getting the 8600k.

4790 or the 8600k? Which is better for gaming?

The 8600k is better, but requires new RAM and motherboard.

The 4790 is still decent, and just drops into your current motherboard.

I'd just find a used 4790, and save up for a more substantial upgrade, like when their 10nm CPUs come out.

Especially if you're playing on a 1080p monitor. You didn't state what you're running.

What's your monitor? Are you going to upgrade it to 144hz?

Just going to throw out the overall performance per dollar option

My bad, I'm on a 1080p 60hz monitor. I'll have a look at what's what

If you're just playing at that resolution and refresh rate there's no need to get anything more than an i7.

Or the non K. I just think the 4790k would be easier to find on the used market.

Only if it's super cheap, otherwise I would suggest getting on AM4 so you have CPUs until 2020, Even an R5 1400 will be fine for 60hz gaming

There's scaling for the Ryzen chips in games
