Programs restoring on boot since the W10 update

Hey,

Ever since the fall update, when I boot my PC, it restores all my applications to the state they were in (chrome tabs, outlook, discord, etc etc).

It doesn't immediately open them on boot, takes a few seconds so it doesn't immediately load into them.

Any idea why this happens? It's driving me crazy

It is a genuine feature of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

The feature is called "Pick up where I left off".

To disable it, go to Cortana > Notebook (on the left side column) > Pick up where I left off > Turn off.

The delay in startup is because since Windows 8, startup programs are delayed. This was done for shitty system with crap HDDs in them to give time for Windows to finish loading itself and the account, so that you can start using it and not be delayed by startup background programs. Sadly, there is no detection system, so it doesn't disable the delay. To remove the delay (or change the time), you need to go in the registry (Start > type: regedit > pick: Regedit), and navigate to (or copy the path here, and paste it in the address bar and hit Enter): HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Then right-click on "Explorer" folder on the left column, and pick: New > Key, and call it Serialize. Then in Serialize folder, right-click on the main pane area, and pick: New > DWORD (32-bit), and call it: Startupdelayinmsec, and set the time. 0 means no delay (which is the default value of a new DWORD).

The sucky news is that if you are interested in this, you need to do it for every major Windows update. What i suggest, is to right-click on "Serialize" folder, and pick "Export", and export the .reg file. Like this in the future, you can just double click, and it will set back the setting.

Hope this helps.

Hi @GoodBytes, first of all, thanks for helping out.

I have an issue, due to my region, Cortana is not available and I cannot access it's settings.

Very simple: Start > type: Region > Pick: Region & Language Settings.

You'll jump directly there in the Settings panel. Set the region to United States (you'll get full featured Cortana and Windows features. Just keep in mind that the Store will also assume you are in the US and charge you in US currency), and that is it. You might need to restart your PC if its still not accessible to restart Cortana, but it should be there. Cortana might need to be enabled if its not to access, but you can disable it if that is the case after, and change your region back. Post in the Feedback Hub the issue so that Microsoft notice the issue of the settings placement, and maybe put it under Cortana section in the Settings panel instead.

Thanks @GoodBytes, the issue seems  to have mostly gone away.

Now on boot it'll open some of those programs (chrome/outlook/task manager) but at least Chrome now doesn't restore all of the tabs from before.

So then, and in this case something you or something beside Windows did: you probably have programs in your startup folder, or in the startup registry item. Checkout Task Manager > Startup tab. You can also see task scheduler (start > type: Task, and pick: Task Scheduler), you can also use CCleaner to have a different view of it all, if you prefer

  • 2 weeks later...

Found the fix, turns out it was Windows's Hybdrid shutdown ("fast boot").

To anyone who also has it:

- Go to Control Panel

- -> Hardware and Sound

- -> Power Options

- -> (On the left) Choose what the power buttons do

- Disable "Turn on fast startup (recommended)"
