I'm really not sure what to get. I figured I can build an itx PC with my desired specs for about 800 give or take.  Depending on which processor I chose.

Either 7700 or the 8400 or 8700

I don't need a k series.

I'm not a gamer.

I want a digital audio workstation

Now laptops are looking like to be less powerful but more portable

I have read that the new 8550u is a good processor to get.

Will a modern laptop be sufficient for my needs?

A good laptop is looking to be at least

1200. Which would be fine but they are way less powerful.

Not sure.

I think a bigger question is do you want it to be portable, or not?

If not, then I'd go mITX. If you have a problem with a component, you can replace it. Easier to upgrade if needed as well.

CPU questions is more about how are you planning on cooling. 7700/K is hot chip and I've heard that 8xxx series isn't better. In ITX you will have AIO or very hot chip.

I know the chips run hot but with only the cpu cooler (noctua) I have the chip doesn't get much over 50 Celsius.

Like I said I am only doing audio.  And I am considering getting a CPU that is not a K series so I can drop the TDP to 65.

I just don't know what is a better option performance wise. I'll post another thread with this question based off of my choices.
