Old School Tech - 50pin IDE Hard Drive

Is there a way to convert 50pin IDE hard drive and connect them to a 40pin connector? We are trying to format them and keep them for the future. We have other machines use 50pin IDE but the software does not allow us format the hard drive. Note: Machine does not have no CD drive or any USB connector.
