What resolution will you game on?
How much memory do you have?
What power supply are you running, can it take a 1080?

Answer these since helping you with the info you gave is .. a bottleneck

You're right my bad :)

In regards to RAM i have 16GB DDR3, my power supply should be enough as it is 750W.

The resolution for now will only be 1080p. Once I upgrade everything that's another story.

GTX 1080 is quite powerful for 1080p and if you only game at 60hz this is your main bottleneck for now...cause you're limiting yourself to 1080p resolution and 60hz refresh rate where as this card can easily handle 1440p resolution and 100hz+ refresh rates.

CPU is fine for now, i would get the GPU and a new monitor, and then consider a platform upgrade.

Yes I know that for my current set up the 1080 is an over kill. But I am soon going to upgrade my whole system, I just don't want to spend a load of money at the same time :| So I will be upgrading my monitors as well of course.

I'm using an i7-2600K (not overclocked) and GTX 1070. I can play most games on almost top graphics at 1440p 144Hz. The processor shouldn't be a bottleneck.

If I don't plan on playing any 4k games in the near future, do you think it's worth more going for the 1070 instead? since there is quite a lot of difference in price...

I'd say so. I seriously considered getting a 1080 and decided that it wasn't worth the extra spend for my needs. The 1070 can do 2K gaming just find. 1080p is a doddle for it.

Stop and think a second, something is more than nothing.

No worries. :) With the 1070 Ti having recently been released (with more performance and at the same price point that the 1070's were originally at), they have driven the prices down a little of the normal 1070's. So you can either get a 1070 or the 1070 Ti.

Stop and think a second, something is more than nothing.

While the 2600 is fairly old by this point, it's still capable enough to sufficiently drive a GTX 1080, especially if 1080p at 60Hz is your current goal.

You should be fine for most games.

It'll get the job done, from what he said memory and power also shouldn't be an issue.

You'll be fine, though for 1080p 60 hz a 1080 is kinda overkill. If you'll be upgrading to 1440p soon though that makes sense.
