that black bar is because the content resolution and your monitor's resolution doesn't match

for example, i used to have black bars on virtually everything because i was running 1920 x 1200, slightly higher than 1920 x 1080, and content is usually done at 16:9, so 1920 x 1080.

138 is a good number.

I know, but I was wondering if there would be a way to change the resolution that the video plays at. I appreciate it may look weird, but the user could decide what they want to use - 'correct resolution', or black boxes (if they aren't the same) :)

There would be little to no point. Since its currently uploaded and rescaled, they are keeping aspect ratio same, 16:9. It would be skewed if there would be rescale to 16:10, 5:4, 4:3 or 21:9 resolutions. And since content is watched most on mobile, users needing anything but 21:9 would be very small. And that 21:9 is would look terrible. If others aren't.

No, because the content's aspect ratio and your monitor's aspect ratio don't match.  you can still full the screen with a resolution mismatch.

Hey there!
I was wondering for floatplane - would it be possible for the user to select their resolution, or get it to auto detect? So that when you go full screen there is no black bars or anything.

Thank! :)

You can select your own resolution, but as I explained above, if you're getting black bars, it's due to an aspect ratio mismatch and there's no way to avoid that without stretching or cropping, both of which are terrible options.

I can give floatplane a good idea, make the aesthetics looks of it in the Forum nicer so it works like a fancy yet cheaper forum contribution.

ya know Float Plane should not limit content to 4k like youtube, so people with 8k displays can actually gets there $'s worth from the creators that can film in 8k.

No one is using an 8K display and if they are, they're not getting their money's worth, just, in general xD

yeah, this is why there's hardly anyone using it and if they are, they're not getting their money's worth no matter what xD

Streaming 4K costs premium. Streaming 8K in most parts of world is pretty impossible. Would you like to buy 10min YT videos in BD? 'cause that would be cheaper than streaming and storing that amount of data.

I mean, maybe its something to consider in the future? For ages we thought that HD was just a wild crazy idea and now look... it might not be something feasible or sensible just now, but its always something to consider. Future-proofing is good! :D

my point still stands because some people do have that kind of money to spare on a monitor

yeah but no one trying to get a huge amount of subs at $3.00 each one is going to care about the 2 who have an 8k monitor.  Its a business it needs to make some sense or be justified in some way.

Yeah it will be in the future. Will see if Floatplane is even around by the time 8k video matters. Lets be honest cable companies TV shows and movies Excluding Phyisical barley get to 1080p contnent today. Netflix 4k is some of the best picture and its really only around 1080p blu ray.  with cable being wayyy worse.

Yeah it'll be a thing in the future I'm sure but we're talking at least a good 10 years away for popularity imo, and considering what else (including price) will change in that time, I would say "future-proofing" is most certainly not good since you'll just be wasting a ton of money
