No, it is not fast enough, especially the consumber grade optane. If it ever does get used for memory, it would be a slower and cheaper alternative to ram

Will the wait be long for Optane SSD's or the like to eliminate the need for RAM?

Snowkat

they are not the same. ram is here to stay.

Optane SSD not the Optane DRAM bridge... good ol'Intel naming conventions...

SnowKat

you'd still need ram.

think of it as an add-on. not a replacement.

At R/W speeds of 2000MB/s - 2500MB/s there becomes a point where RAM is an extra un-required step.

ram is around 25GB/s though

intel does have a plan to use optane as a ram extender but it wont replace it, and that will probably be server only

Was hoping my next build was going to be a huge GPU, Mobo and super fast SSD with no need for RAM....

SnowKat

There's too much between the SSD and CPU for that to work. Plus, while SSDs nowdays are extremely fast for sequential read/writes, they still can't come close to RAM in terms of small, random access (hence the name, RAM), which is what is most important for the vast majority of the functions performed by RAM.

It's not all about peak bandwidth, a lot of it is down to response and speed, which SSDs just can't match.

Ram is still way faster, has lower latency, and higher random numbers.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

It should be noted that the Xpoint ram use case is not for direct performance, but indirectly by providing better cost per capacity than dram.
