Hey guys, someone at work is looking at getting a high end build built for them buy me, I need to know what kind of a PSU I'll need as PC Part Picker doesnt have all the parts.

Here goes (by the way this is specified by customer I can't change their mind):

-AMD FX9590 4.7GHZ (will overclock)

-ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2 mobo

-Kingston 2x4GB 1800Mhz RAM

-Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 500GB

-MSI 7850 OC Edition (will overclock) (WILL ADD ANOTHER AT A LATER DATE, ALSO OVERCLOCKED)

-Generic Samsung CD Drive

-Corsair H100i

-A few generic case fans

So what wattage should I go with

This is a really bad combination. I don't think that board is clear for a 220w TDP chip let alone overclock beyond that. GPU choice is pretty underwhelming, but they peak out at around ~130w each.

A good 700w will do fine.

Get a 9370 for better RAM. That 133Mhz is gonna be a problem...

No.

220 watts for the CPU, so OC count a 100 watts more for the OC.

260 watts for the 2 GPU's, + 100 watts for the OC

that makes 680 watts, so your 700 watts is already obsolete....

get a 850 - 1000 (if you can find some cheap)

If you're running a 9590 you're going to want a motherboard that is rated for more than 140W CPU's given it's a 220W CPU.

First off:  Wat.  Second, i think at least 850 watts.  Third, PLEASE TELL THE CLIENT THAT YOU NEED FASTER RAM!!!!  Also, maybe get the 8350, since its the same cpu but clocked slightly lower and get a better gpu.  The 7850 belongs with a lower end cpu.

I don't think it's worth getting a 7850 anymore. Get a single R9 280X or pony up the extra cash for a R9 290. As for the PSU, get a nice 500-650w unit if you change your mind and go with a newer GPU instead of crossfiring two obsolete ones.

OK What is up with the motherboard? Going from bad...okay...but still no (ASRock 990FX Extreme3) ...to WORSE (ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2).

You NEED a motherboard that supports that 220W   Processor. If you don't, YOU WILL BURN OUT / FRY THE MOTHERBOARD (VRM's).

Sorry for the language, but the fucking ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2 only supports up to 140W...and it uses a crappy 4+1 power phase. That wouldn't technically be safe for even a FX-8320 or a FX-8350 - let a alone a 220W FX-9590!!

The FX-9590 isn't even on the supported CPU list.

You need a high-end ass board to provide all the power a 220W Godzilla needs. High-End as in:

- ASUS Crosshair V Formula (Z) [8+2 power phase, heatsink cooled, over-voltage / over-current / over-heat protection]

- ASUS 990FX Sabertooth [8+2 power phase, heatsink cooled, over-voltage / over-current / over-heat protection]

- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7

- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5

- AsRock 990FX Extreme4

- AsRock 990FX Fataility [impressive 12+2 power phase]

- MSI Big Bang 990FX

- MSI 990FXA-GD80

- MSI 990FXA-GD65

There is also a MINIMUM requirement for the CPU cooling (the H100i should be fine); ASUS recommends, at the very least, a Corsair H80i.

A Well built 750W would be enough, but considering you are overclocking the two HD 7850's (I agree with the other to swap it out for something else) AND overclocking the FX-9590, get a 850W for more leg room.

Something like a... Corsair HX750 or HX850...or something similar from SeaSonic / XFX / Antec.

EDIT: Now that I think about it...I'm not 110% sure if even the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 or MSI 990FXA-GD65 will be okay. They could be just marginal....
