Bought a laptop. I’m going to upgrade it with a SSD and therefore have to do a fresh OS install.

Of course, the laptop comes pre-installed with Windows 8.  Does anyone know how to extract that copy of Windows 8 from the partition on the original hard disk or have any other recommendations as far as being able to use the copy of Windows 8 that comes preinstalled and using it to install on the SSD?

Any thoughts or help would be awesome!

Yeah, I really don't want to clone the original hard drive.  I like to re-install a fresh OS and drivers with a new computer.  And I've tried your suggestion with other laptops with limited success.

your " extract that copy of Windows 8 from the partition on the original hard disk" is still technically a clone as your using the same copy of windows. do you know what went wrong in your other attempts?

Yes, you're right.  It would be a clone, but I just want the OS.  Not the other bloatware and extra software that comes with it.  My previous experience with cloning the hard drive to my SSD was using the included clone kit that came with my crucial SSD.  Ultimately the software used to clone got hung up and after about 4 or 5 hours of no progression during the cloning process, I gave up. I was not impressed.

Ah ok well if you use any solution that will use your current hdd it wont know the difference between the manufactures crap and the necessary drivers/software. you could change to a linux based os like Ubuntu/Fedora there both pretty easy to start off with.

(Otherwise since you did actually pay for the os in the first place you could pirate the os without the moral feeling of robbing in which case there is no bloat ware)[you could also ring microsoft and explain it to them, but thats unlikely to do anything but annoy you.]

since you have a second drive the ssd available i would download the windows 8 disk's from there site burn the disk.  put in the ssd and do a windows install from the disk and serial presumably on the sticker on you computer.  This may not activate and you may need to contact ms directly for the activation and they may refuse to do it.  but it will only cost you time if you really want a fresh install with no bloat where.

i used the word may far too many times here

see http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/f/download-windows-8.htm

Your pre-installed windows copy will work straight on new HDD/SSD. You just need to get install disc/USB for it. Nothing else. Pre-installed OS's are bound to mobo, not to drive.

For cleaning the bloatware just use the decrapifier.

And like said clone the drive

Don't clone the drive - here's a more well rounded solution (you won't get the bloat from the shitty pre-installed OS)

1) Install SSD (duh)

2) Create a boot disc/USB

3) Install Windows using the said boot drive

4) Use the activation code that came with the laptop (it should be on the either the brick or the back of the laptop)

5) Install what you need

And BAM, Windows without the shit from OEMs

EDIT: I just realised that this was already suggested.... sad banana

Before any of this make sure you have the old key. There are several programs out there that can do this. Just do a google for how to find the windows product key. Then on the drive you want to replace:

Click Start, type: CMD
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator
At the command prompt, type: slmgr.vbs -upk

Hit Enter, this will uninstall the product key from the computer and set it back to trial mode, you are now free to use it on another computer.

Should work for win 7&8

Good advice head up though many of those programs dont get the proper key for windows 8 and the newest office so just get the one off the sticker or whatever.

This one works great and I have used it before. It also gives you the keys for Office if you got it.

Windows 8 Product keys are encrypted in the BIOS. You don't have to put a windows 8 product key in when reinstalling the OS. You'll never find the key sticker like you would on a windows 7 laptop.
