New Amp or Speakers?

Go to solution Solved by johnt,

It's not so much that your speakers are more powerful than your amp. Based on the specs of your speakers and amp, I would say your amp is a bit weak to keep up with newer speakers.

But you don't really need anything too fancy either. I would look on the used market for a receiver that meets your needs. Dedicated two channel amps might be harder, and more expensive, to find.

I currently have a pair of Mordaunt-Short Avant 906 tower speakers and I have noticed that the speakers are waaaay more powerful than my amp. My amp is a Pioneer sa-7100. Should I get a pair of smaller speakers that suit the power rating of the amp or a new amp that suits the speakers? I am driving from my PC and my room size is 81 inches wide, 130 inches long and 118 inches tall and the floor is carpet. My speakers are 120W RMS each. Any suggestions for other speakers would be great, my budget is about £80 or $105 or 89 euros.

When it comes to making a better stereo or headphone set-up, the rule of thumb I go by is upgrade your headphones then your amp then your source. So, based on that you wont be getting a better system if you replace your speakers. Just as JohnT said look for a used surround sound reciever. They are usually around 50-75 watts per channel in stereo which should be more than enough. My personal recommendation would be a denon reciever. The last one I bought had a broken HDMI board and I picked it up for $50 usd, and works great as a stereo amp.

I got a denon with working hdmi for $25, onkyo with broken hdmi for $30.
