New build: cpu question

The latest socket for Intel cpus is 1151 or 1151-2 if you will so. AMD Ryzen is quite a viable option, too though. That is to say depending on the resolution used.

The lga 1151 is newest and it has the z370 chipset... I would just get an ASUS z370 motherboard and an i5 8400 or i5 8600k

Budget and PC purpose? the latest socket is the LGA1151v2 of z370 chipset, but it was only a paper launch and is not widely available yet.

For strictly gaming I would go for the i5-8400 or the i5-8600k, that will get you the best game performance in the mid-range tier. But as mentioned CPU availability is non-existent for the time being, I expect that to change within a months time though.

Simply because Intel has made the launch of Coffee Lake several months earlier than originally planned because AMD Ryzen was winning too much market share due to Intel Kaby Lake being a bit over priced for what it offered.

 

Since the stocks on Kaby Lake are still big and the motherboard manufactures partners hadn't much time to get stuff ready there is a noticeable shortage on Coffee Lake offerings as for right now, this should continue until January.

Any 6 core Intel CoffeeLake CPU is in short supplied because they released the line-up before having any built stock. The 4 core i3 processors are fine as far as stock goes but the i5-and i7 is a different story. Expect to wait about 2 months for stock to show up more consistently, waiting until January is unlikely.

I would get the Asus Z370 TUF Pro Gaming, however, if you would like to have Wi-Fi built into your motherboard already get the Asus Z370-E ROG STRIX Gaming motherboard.
