I'm trying to upgrade the memory on the server. Currently it only has 8GB. I'd like to put 32GB.

I've got 2 16GB ECC ram which was used from a Dell PE R720. I've tried both memory modules. The serial name is M393BG3G70BH0-YH9

What's the max supported RAM in that server? Perhaps it won't see those chips, given the size.

Looks like 8GB chips are max size

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

The memory is not compatible. You need more expensive RAM, not the cheap which was built in into the R720.

Cheap?! The 16GB modules cost like £100 each..

Your issue is that the CPUs that are supported in that server only support ECC Unbuffered (UDIMM) and your trying to use ECC Registered (RDIMM), it's not going to work.

There's different kinds of ECC RAM and only the Xeon E5 and higher support the good stuff, ECC Reg.

Oh. I didn't realise that. :/ Well. I want to get ESXi running on it. I've got a server that I to turn into a VM.. Seems like I'll have to look for the same memory on my server. 8GB won't be enough for 4 VMs.. :(

Make sure the RAM is noted as specifically working in the R210ii, I've purchased two different generic labeled UDIMM kits for my R210ii that don't work in it, but do work in my TS140 which takes UDIMM as well... the factory Lenovo RAM from the TS140 does work in the R210ii, as does the RAM from a Dell T20.

Typically if the RAM has a large heat-spreader on it, it is a RDIMM.
