Built my current rig really to get into gaming on PC and to edit for youtube on something better than my rubbish laptop. I feel it's time for an upgrade. Below are my current build and then what I plan to change. I've left out optical dirves and my other hard drives.

Current - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Jh6vBP

Upgrade - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/pZnk2R

Any field left blank in the upgrade is just being carried over.

Is this a good idea and if so, should I upgrade my PSU while I'm at it so I have loads of extra power for when I get a Volta card later down the line?

Yeah definitely upgrade, I'd advise waiting until Black Friday or the holidays if at all possible. A PSU upgrade would probably be nice too

What programs do you use? Some may perform better on the 8400.

Don't get the Hyper 212. Just use the stock cooler.

You'll definitely want to swap the PSU. The EVGA 80+ units are quite crap. CX/M in 450-550W is fine.

:)

Your gpu will hold you back, I recommend evga 1060 sc

I know but I can't afford to do full system right now so I'm holding onto it until I can afford an upgrade.

Mostly Premiere Pro but also Handbrake. I prefer to have a non-downward facing cooler. I've found I get less dust buildup.

For Premiere, the 8400 should be a little faster. And if you decide to upgrade your GPU, the 8400 should have a little more headroom.

The 212 isn't that great a cooler. The Dark Rock 3, Cryorig H7/H5, Noctua NH-U12/14S should all outperform it.

I forgot to say I also want to game and stream. Not sure about other coolers. Don't know much about them

For gaming, the 8400 will be better. For streaming, the 1600 should be better. 1600 combo should be cheaper as well

Price is a big factor for me. I'm going to get the 1600
