1080Ti, or volta?

Planning a new build soon with an 8700k, 16gb ram, the usual.

 

Wondering whether I get a 1080Ti now, or wait for Volta? I really don't want to spend almost £800 on a graphics card for it to then be replaced 2 months later by a 2070 that will beat it in performance for £400.

 

Thoughts?

Get the 1080Ti, no regrets. Volta won't be around until atleast q1 2019. Also, no, if there is a 2070 it won't match the 1080Ti.

IS there even going to be consumer Volta?  I thought nvidia had basically gone "hm, I guess there's no competition... let it ride!"

The 1070 matches the 980ti (unless heavily OC'd) and the 780ti matches the 970...

Right now the estimates are Volta in 2018 and considering the timing of Pascal Tesla relative to Pascal consumer cards it wouldn't be crazy to guess that since Volta Tesla is already out, Volta consumer will be out in 2018 some time. What makes you think Volta for consumers won't be out until 2019?

 

Anyway, OP unless you willing to wait 6mo-1yr before getting a GPU then you may as well just go with the 1080Ti now and call it a day. For anything less than 4k gaming the 1080Ti will be more than enough for ultra settings at >60fps for at least a few years.

Because nvidia is not under any pressure to launch Volta any time soon. They will continue to milk with Pascal.

I mean the 970 = 780Ti, the 1070 = 980Ti

I wouldn't be surprised if the 2070 beats the 1080Ti.... Just look at the P100 compared to the V100. You see a 50% increase in FP32 performance. If you extrapolate (with some assumptions obviously), the 1070 with a 50% increase in performance would result in equal performance to the 1080Ti, add in some other improvements like faster memory and better support for things like better a-sync/DX12 support and perhaps mixed-precision computations (new for Volta using their new Tensor core tech) in games (for certain tasks, probably things like physics) and it wouldn't be inconceivable to imagine the 2070 can beat (or at least match) the 1080Ti.

won't be 2 months, probably more around 5-6 months, if you are always waiting for something better, well there will always be something better for cheaper a year or so later, thats just how it works, buy what is available that does what you need it to do and stop worrying about the costs.
